5. Did Batman Die? - The Dark Knight Rises

Joker Scars Dark Knight

There is a rather poetic reading of the end of The Dark Knight Rises that suggests that none of the tagged on final scene featuring Alfred coming across Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle in the cafe happened anywhere but within his emotionally vulnerable psyche. In truth, it's actually a far more satisfactory suggestion than the idea that it happened in real life.

That reading of the ending isn't merely the fanciful creation of fans who wish Nolan had been brave enough to kill his Batman off (since it would have suited his arc and the mythology of the character far better than just sort of retiring), it actually has some fairly pressing evidence.

Firstly, how would a globally recognised billionaire of Bruce's standing get away with it without being noticed? How would he survive the bomb blast? And why the hell would Alfred suddenly pack up and go on holiday when he's basically crippled with grief? Surely, this has to be the dream of a tortured old man who has watched his family torn apart again?
