12 Blockbuster Films That Flopped In America (But Were Loved Overseas)
10. Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013) - $226.3 Million Worldwide
Budget: $50m Domestic Box Office: $55.7m International Box Office: $170.6m The recent cinematic trend for revisionist fairy tales took an odd turn with Tommy Wirkola's Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, a tonally confused, often incoherent yet strangely enjoyable action/horror/comedy hybrid produced by none other than Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. The movie did manage to open in first place at the domestic box office, albeit with a weak $19.7m, but it was the overseas numbers that turned the movie into a bona-fide success story. For a project shot mostly on location in Europe with an international cast and crew, Brazil surprisingly turned out to be the movie's biggest market outside of the United States, where it earned an impressive $22.8m. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters also posted strong numbers in Germany, Russia and Mexico, with overseas box office accounting for over 75% of the movie's worldwide total. Despite a critical drubbing the movie is surely destined to become a cult favorite, and actually earned more money at the box office than prestige dramas Captain Phillips and 12 Years A Slave, turning it into one of the biggest surprise hits of 2013.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
