12 Brilliant Recent Horror Movies That Shocked Everyone

5. Apostle (2018)

Invisible Man
Netflix

Have you ever watched The Wicker Man and wished it was just a little more edgy? Have no fear - Apostle is here. A bloke receives a letter indicating a woman needs his help and ends up getting dragged into a pagan cult.

But, just because it owes its bare bones to the classic horror film doesn't mean Apostle isn't a worthy addition to cult horror - and it definitely pays better homage The Wicker Man than that unspeakable remake.

Apostle slowly builds nail-biting levels of suspense. You'd think a plot kicked off with a ransom letter from a cult would be a bit more sudden, but instead we watch as Thomas Richardson infiltrates and explores the cult's actions in an effort to rescue his sister unharmed. With him undercover, the anxiety stems from not knowing if and when our protagonist will be found out - and what horrors might be in store for him should he be so unlucky.

And while it might take a little while for the gory bits to crop up, it's worth the wait. The torturous scenes are stomach-churning, but not gratuitous. After all, pagan cults obsessed with blood rituals are bound to get a bit nasty.

At least it's not quite the deep descent into depression that The Wicker Man is. If you want a mildly disturbing, stressful film that doesn't end awfully for everyone, look no further.
