12 Controversial Movie Endings That Came Out Of Nowhere
5. The Police Turn Up - Monty Python And The Holy Grail
Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the sort of movie where anything can - and does - happen, but that didn't make its abrupt ending any less shocking or controversial. After embarking on a long and perilous journey to find the Holy Grail of the movie's title, King Arthur and his Knights prepare to ambush a castle. Then, out of nowhere, the police - yes, the modern day police - crash onto the scene. They arrest all of the characters and pile them into a van. And that's it: the movie ends with a policeman putting his hand against the camera. There's no conclusion. Arthur doesn't find the Grail. It's all over. In a way, Holy Grail's ending served as a kind of a finger to all those who have become accustomed (and partial) to default, "linear" narratives. By cutting the story off mid-way through and just ending the picture at the most random point imaginable, the Python crew either managed to convince you of their genius or outright angry you. Which means that this ending, though certainly innovative, p*ssed off a lot of folk when the film came out.
