12 Cult Classic Sci-Fis You Stupidly Ignored First Time

7. Cube

Godzilla 1998
Trimark Pictures

Directed and co-written by Vincenzo Natali in his feature debut, Cube follows a group of strangers who awake to find themselves trapped in a large maze comprised of cube-shaped rooms. Without knowing where they are, why they're there, or which sections of the maze is rigged with a deadly trap, this gory sci-fi flick had all the components needed to gather a cult following after it premiered at TIFF back in 1997.

While the film received a generally positive reception on release, grossing just under $9 million worldwide from its initial $350,000 budget, the film's reputation was sullied with the release of a horrifically awful sequel and prequel in 2000 and 2004 respectively.

In spite of the general badness of what proceeded it, the original is still an intriguing sci-fi thriller. The premise of Saw in a maze is enough to grab our attention, but the real terror derives from the deteriorating psyche of those trapped in it as they grow increasingly violent and unhinged.

Sure, the acting isn't that great and the effects and filmmaking are very much products of the 90s, but that's all part of the charm after all.

Let's hope the in-development remake can reinvigorate this cult classic.
