12 Directors Who Blamed Studios For Failed Movies
1. Josh Trank - Fantastic Four
The film that tops this list may just be the one the most undeserved criticism of the studio involved, but wow what criticism it received. While the movie proved to be an unmitigated car crash, Director Josh Trank's willingness to point the finger at Fox studios for the film's failures was mighty harsh. Subsequent reports of the Director arriving drunk on set and having little to no interest in comics seem more authentic reasons for the film flopping- but Trank very much thinks differently.
With the film set to release, Trank released a now deleted tweet that has since became infamous. Trank didn't hold back, stating "A year ago I had a fantastic version of this. And it would've received great reviews. You'll probably never see it. That's reality though." With the film set to be released the next day, Trank's timing couldn't have been worse. This, combined with the overall atrocious quality of the film, lead to the film being a massive box office failure.
Comments in the past week have seen Trank being a little more contrite, admitting that he was "absolutely responsible" for the poor state of the film- but so were many others. In a press junket for his upcoming film, the Tom Hardy starring Capone, Trank lamented the lack of support he got from "more experienced people in the room". The irony of this statement is quite remarkable, with Trank first lamenting the studio interference, but now wishing they'd interfered more!
