One of the post-9/11 era’s most chillingly realistic sci-fi horror stories, this sparse indie from 2006 sees a man torn by an impossible moral choice when a deadly disease is accidentally released into the LA atmosphere whilst his wife is away from home. The unbearably tense film sees this increasingly unhinged, paranoid mess of man barricade his home against the infected as he obsesses over details drip-fed through to him, eventually closing himself in to protect from the disease at the cost of his own wife's survival.

Pretty gnarly ending right there already, isn’t it? Hard to top that.

Unless, you know, we discover that barricading himself inside has incubated the virus which has all but died off outside, and now it’s only the protagonist who will die alone from the disease due to his hubris. There’s a moral there somewhere.
