12 Disturbing Sci-Fi Movie Endings That Haunt You
7. Alien Covenant
Yes,
the Alien franchise is no stranger to bleak endings—shout out to David Fincher’s
rightfully reviled third instalment. Hell, that film even manages to have a
bleak beginning (RIP Newt). Even Dan O’Bannon’s original script saw the titular
xenomorph come out on top and kill of the hero—though it did also hop in the
escape pod and imitate their voice on the radio controls, so that might have
been less bleak and more hilarious if it were ever realized onscreen.
But the biscuit is well and truly taken by the most recent instalment, a return to form after the boring diversions of Prometheus. In the brutal Alien Covenant, most of the cast are offed by the eponymous enemy, only for our Ripley alike heroine to outdo the spindly creep. Then the placid android David only goes ahead and double crosses her, deciding to impregnate her and the rest of the hyper sleeping crew with xenomorphs for a very messy eventual awakening whenever they land.
Thanks for the nightmares, Michael Fassbender’s implacable smile.
