12 Great Horror Movie Shorts You Need To See

10. Suicide By Sunlight

Suicide by Sunlight, which can be found on Vimeo, is a brilliant short film by Nikyatu Jusu, providing a welcome spin on the vampire genre. Vampires exist in Suicide by Sunlight’s world, but only black vampires can come out during the day. We follow one of these vampires, a nurse, who is at once caring and predatory, living separated from her daughters and their fathers.

Despite her murderous actions, she remains sympathetic throughout. Her desire to see her children, and the slowly unfolding reasons why she wants to visit one of them in particular are really moving. Moreover, the film does some excellent world-building. We get a sense of these black vampires as both an empowered and yet marginalized community. It’s a fascinating take on American race relations and its yet another piece of evidence, if anyone needs anymore evidence that is, that horror can and should take on heady, societal issues and give us new perspectives on them.

This might be the film on that most deserves to be expanded on: its world is just so intriguing and there are many more stories to be told there.
