If you like a bit of humour alongside your horror, Adam Wingard's You're Next is the movie for you. Released in 2011, You're Next is about a family who are attacked by a group of masked strangers while they celebrate a wedding anniversary over dinner.

Over the course of the story we witness various family members picked off in increasingly brutal ways as the remainder struggle to defend themselves. It would have been very easy for the film to fall foul of the typical “home invasion” horror shtick, but there's a self-awareness to the whole thing that elevates it to a higher level. This is where most of the humour comes in. Relationships play out amidst the violence (one scene sees character Zee ask boyfriend Felix to have sex with her next to his mother's corpse because he “never wants to do anything interesting any more”) and provide laugh after laugh.

With this self-awareness comes an intelligence to the characters rarely seen in the genre, which only makes the experience more satisfying. When one of the victims manages to get the rush on a killer, for example, they don't just clunk them over the head with a vase and move on – they beat the person to death so they can't surprise them later.
