One of the best things about 2015's We Are Still Here (directed by Ted Geoghegan) is how it manages to act as an homage to so many genre classics while also standing on its own two feet.

Set in rural New England during winter, a lonely house wakes every thirty years as the spirits that haunt it demand bloody sacrifice. Unfortunately for Anne (Barbara Crampton) and Paul Sacchetti (Andrew Sensenig), they are the two people inhabiting the home when these thirty years comes to an end, attempting to recover from the tragic death of their son Bobby.

Both Crampton and Sensenig put in emotional, believable performances as the terrified couple, and caring about their loss goes a long way when it comes to caring about their ultimate fate.

From Poltergeist to The Exorcist, the subtle references come thick and fast but they never bog the experience down, which eventually leads to one of the most bizarre and enjoyable climaxes in recent horror.
