12 Hidden Horror Movie Gems Of The Last Decade

There is so much more to the genre than Jordan Peele and Pennywise.

Today's cinema landscape is dominated by remakes and reboots, big, dumb fun action movies, and of course, comic book movies. One genre, however, has been around forever, and doesn't look like going away any time soon - horror.

Cinema has come a long way in the last decade, with the developments in CGI and such introductions of 3D and 4D screening, the first of which becomes something of a crutch for many horror movies. Of course, blood and gore is always welcome in this particular genre, but not at the expense of story and character building.

Too many movies fall into this trap of CGI effects and cheap jump scares, rendering many just too similar to be enjoyed properly. However, when a horror movie is done right, it can be a truly harrowing experience you can't help but applaud.

The majority of these movies however, end up falling under the radar of the mainstream audiences. While all eyes are turned toward Stephen King's latest adaption, or Jordan Peele's next project, as brilliant as these are, there are genuinely incredible movies being seen by almost nobody.

12. Cargo

Known more than anything for his roles as Bilbo Baggins, John Watson, and Tim Canterbury in The Office, Martin Freeman brings more than a little of himself to each of his roles. As Andy in Cargo however, there is something more to his performance, as he portrays a father going through one of the worst experiences any parent could imagine.

As the zombie apocalypse kicks into top gear in Australia, Andy vows to keep his daughter safe from harm, but when he is inevitably bitten by the walking dead, his quest moves from keeping his child protected from the hordes of zombies, to keeping his child protected from himself.

The zombie movie is one of the most saturated sub genres in all of horror, but Cargo offers something different. Instead of the focus being on the monsters themselves, the movie is driven by the character of one man, and the tough, heartbreaking choices he is forced to make.
