12 Horror Films That Will Scare You Senseless In 2020
7. Candyman
The original Candyman was a hook-sharp commentary on the hard knocks of living in Chicago's Cabrini Green project. It was also a bloody terrifying slasher headed up by a career-best performance from Tony Todd.
Whereas the two sequels that followed this 1992 classic have been straight to video fodder, this 21st century version is already dripping with quality. In the first instance we have Jordon Peel on producing duties, who is the master of racial subversion in horror, as well as Todd reportedly back in the frame, alongside Watchmen's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and a rumoured but not confirmed Lakeith Stanfield.
Director Nia DaCosta is behind the camera working from a story rumoured to be set in the same Chicago locale, but one that has vastly changed since the nineties through mass redevelopment and new businesses cropping up. Expect subtext and cutting social commentary, but most importantly, expect hooked slaughtering and bloodshed by the bucket load.
