12 Insane First Drafts Of Famous Movies
7. The One With The Johnny Depp Joke - Birdman
The Movie We Know...
An odd triumph of a movie that won Oscars and perfectly fit Michael Keaton's revival and ended with delicious vagueness to encourage even more discourse (or drive everyone mad).
But, What We Almost Got...
The ending might have infuriated some, but the original plan would have made the whole movie a throw-away joke. Because the very end of the movie was going to be the punchline to a gag about Johnny Depp.
As originally planned, when Keaton's character pulls the trigger to kill himself on stage, it was supposed to jump to him learning that the play was getting rave reviews and then to a dressing room where Depp was to be found with a poster of himself as Jack Sparrow.
As a delightful, but really bloody odd snipe at Depp, Sparrow was then supposed to come alive and say "What the f**k are we doing here, mate?" before an abrupt cut to black. Thankfully, the studio couldn't sign Depp on, so the writers had to rewrite it.
