12 Insane First Drafts Of Famous Movies
4. The One With The Unresolved Childhood Trauma - Monsters Inc
The Movie We Know...
An inversion of the monsters-under-the-bed folklore that plagues all children, imagining an alternate world where monster society is powered by the screams of children, harvested by scarers, who are basically the rockstars of that world. It all goes wrong when an innocent child invades.
But, What We Almost Got...
No child star and a lot more psychoanalysis, by the sound of it.
Peter Docter revealed that Monsters Inc was actually going to be about a 30-year-old man suffering with depression, in a rut with work who discovers a book of monsters drawings he did as a child, which promptly come to life and reveal themselves to be his unresolved fears.
As he discovers the fears, the monsters - which become his friends - disappear, to add that familiar Pixar pathos. In the end, less complexity actually made for a better movie, by the sound of it.
