Imagine the scenario, you're a regular New Yorker, advancing in years who witnessed the Battle Of New York and heard about the New Mexico incident where an alien and a giant robot had a fight and caused masses of damage. That would be enough to make you paranoid about alien invasions, but what about those New Yorkers who were on a train about thirty years ago and witnessed a strange woman get on and beat the absolute living hell out of a surprisingly acrobatic old lady and then fire energy blasts out of her hands?

They would already have spent thirty years wondering which random strangers were going to start beating up old ladies or which old ladies were secret acrobatic ninjas. Or who was really an alien capable of firing energy out of their hands while looking suspiciously like humans. You see, for Captain Marvel, Nick Fury and the Skrull, the Secret Invasion was over, but for ANYONE who witnessed that whole exchange, it never ended.
