The Confusing Moment:

Though there's a rich thread in Lord Of The Rings suggesting that JRR Tolkein was a self-hating human (since he extols the evils of the world of Men lots), it's still slightly confusing that he paints Boromir to be a total dick, only to have him redeem himself heroically before death.

It's a nice moment, but up until that face-turn to protect the Hobbits, he just appears to be a bit of a grumpy sod who is easily led by the Ring's influence. It never quite sits well.

The Deleted Scene:

There was supposed to be a flash-back scene in The Two Towers that explained Boromir's whole motivation - and extended his father's malevolence in the process. The scene showed Boromir and Faramir celebrating a victory when their father Denethor comes to tell them about the Council at Rivendell and the One Ring, and to instruct Boromir to get the ring for Gondor.

That's why he's the way he is - he's driven by his father's corrupting will and his hope to protect Gondor and his people, and while he initially flatly refuses, he quickly changes his tune (though it's shown to be all in Gondor's honour).
