An early Michael Caine vehicle, 1971’s Get Carter saw director Mike Hodges shoot an edgier and darker breed of gritty British crime thriller which looked more like its American contemporary Dirty Harry than the light-hearted capers of The Italian Job.
This revenge film followed the titular anti-hero as he returned to his hometown to settle a score and avenge a friend, gradually working his way through the criminal underworld with grit, wit, and mettle, before eventually facing off with his nemesis and dispatching of him with style.
Then the slick, effortlessly cool Carter is hit in the head with a faceless sniper’s bullet and dies instantly, lying on the beach and bleeding out.
Guess this really is an anti-crime film after all, then.
