Why It's Desperate: A period film based on an award-winning, beloved novel, adapted to the screen by Oscar-nominee Nick Hornby, starring prior nominee Saoirse Ronan, two-time nominee Julie Walters and one-time winner Jim Broadbent. What's not to like? Will It Succeed?: Riding a wave of acclaim, Brooklyn is a dead-cert nominee for Best Picture, Best Actress (Ronan), Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Costume Design, while it could also sneak less-likely nods for Score and Film Editing. Sadly, though, the film seems destined to play the bridesmaid across the board: Picture is unlikely, Ronan will likely get beaten by Brie Larson for Room, the screenplay will get pipped by Aaron Sorkin's work on Steve Jobs, and the costume honours will likely go to Carol or Cinderella.
