Why It's Desperate: A lesbian fights for her pension benefits to be passed on to her partner before she succumbs to cancer. It might be cynical to say, but that's ticking two boxes right away. Then there's the presence of a highly Oscar-friendly cast, including recent Best Actress winner Julianne Moore and nominees Ellen Page, Michael Shannon and Steve Carell. Will It Succeed?: Not a hope in hell. The film has had a lukewarm reception ever since it premiered at TIFF, so while it sounds like prime-rib Oscar material on paper, it's going to miss out on even a single nomination due to its thinly-written characters which deny the stupendous cast the opportunity to do much of interest. Still, there's always the chance of a Golden Globe, right?
