12 Most Disappointing Movies From Summer 2016
5. X-Men: Apocalypse
The Buzz: Bryan Singer steps up to the X-Men plate for the fourth time, bringing in the terrific Oscar Isaac to play iconic supervillain Apocalypse, while young, new versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler and Storm are thrown into the mix alongside Psylocke, Angel and many more. Oh, and Wolverine's in it in some form.
What We Got: Well, it was OK, but a major comedown from Days of Future Past, failing to make the most of its titular villain as well as the mostly solid cast of young actors (except for Sophie Turner, who made for a truly terrible Jean Grey).
It's an exceedingly generic, punishingly overlong movie that rushes through the set-up, boasts only one memorable action sequence (Quicksilver strikes again!) and ends up concluding with a CGI overkill finale. Sure, Wolverine's cameo was cool, but that entire sequence was ultimately wildly unnecessary.
It's fine, but it's clear that audiences and critics are getting fatigued with the series, and something wholly more imaginative will be required to keep things afloat next time.
