1. Okja – Like A Pig To The Slaughter
South Korean director Bong Joon-ho’s epic adventure-fantasy was without a doubt one of 2017’s most charming movies. At face value a whimsical tale of the bond between a girl, Mija, and her pet Okja – who just happens to be an adorable genetically modified super-pig – it’s also a dark critique of the meat production industry powerful enough to make you think twice before chowing down on your next bacon sandwich.
Raised by Mija since a piglet, Okja is reclaimed by the corporation that created her for what is ostensibly a porcine beauty pageant but really means she’s off to be slaughtered for meat. After teaming with the Animal Liberation Front, Mija is eventually able to buy Okja back from the evil corporation just before she’s about to meet her maker and saves the super-pig’s life.
It’s a bittersweet moment, however, as when the reunited pair are departing the abattoir they pass a fenced off area where hundreds more super-pigs unable to escape their fate are awaiting slaughter. At one point, two parent pigs nudge their baby under the fence who Okja hides in her mouth and smuggles to safety. One super-piglet is saved but the sight of all those other super-pigs trudging to their deaths is unforgettably devastating.
