12 Most Emotionally Devastating Movie Moments Of 2017
7. Logan – Professor Charles Xavier’s Death
Thanks to some not-so-subtle trailers and Patrick Stewart’s announcement that Logan would be his last appearance in an X-Men film, we knew it was likely that Professor Charles Xavier – now vulnerable and ravaged by old age and a dementia-like disease – would pop his clogs. What we weren’t prepared for was how hard his death would hit us.
As he’s lying in bed during a rare moment of respite for the lamming trio, Charles is having an emotional heart-to-heart with Logan during which he confesses he remembers his inadvertent role in the tragic Westchester incident and tells his long-time mutant friend that he finally understands him. Only it isn’t Logan but his Transigen clone X-24, who suddenly and savagely kills Charles by a stab to the chest with his claws.
The look of betrayal and horror that crosses Charles’ face as he believes he’s been killed by his closest ally before realising it’s his clone is almost unbearable. It’s a shocking and violent end for Charles that’s in-keeping with the tone of Logan, but what a gut punch.
