The Dark Knight Rises Ending
Warner Bros. Pictures

While not everyone appreciated how Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy concluded, there was at least general agreement that the director had understood the core of the character. However, when it came time for Zack Snyder to attempt to follow suit on Superman reboot Man of Steel, there were widespread doubts from the get-go.

As if the dull colour scheme and downbeat tone weren't enough, Man of Steel took Superman to darker places than ever before in its grand finale, in which Henry Cavill's Kal-El does battle with his arch nemesis, Michael Shannon's Zod, in downtown Metropolis.

This conclusion upset viewers for a number of reasons. The most frequent complaint is that the battle ends with Superman killing Zod, something which many have argued goes against the core nature of the character.

But even if we dispute this (as many defenders have), it's hard to get around Superman's apparent callousness during the fight, showing no concern for the destruction of pretty much an entire city, and the loss of innocent life that goes along with that.

The fact that this building-smashing spectacle inevitably evokes the imagery of a very real tragedy from living memory, 9/11, makes it feel all the more distasteful.

Still, to give Snyder and co some credit, they would directly address these issues in follow-up Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice - but that one brought a whole lot of other problems to the table.
