12 Movie Franchises That Need To Take A Break
7. The Purge
Much like the Insidious franchise, The Purge movies are produced for a pittance and turn in colossal profits. On a combined $35 million budget, the four movies released to date have grossed $446.9 million, and also like Insidious, the latest one has become the most financially successful of the lot.
Sadly, The First Purge seemed to suggest the series has hit its stagnation point, with the action lacking the brutal imagination of prior instalments while failing to expand the series' mythology in any particularly meaningful way.
With The Purge TV series set to debut in early September, it probably makes sense for the movies to go away for a while, before returning with a fifth (and final?) film that leaps forward in time and explains what happened following the third movie, The Purge: Election Year.
TV is a better format for this sort of storytelling, really, though Universal likely won't want to miss out on those easy $120 million paychecks for too long. As such, don't count on The Purge 5 being more than two or three years away.
