12 Movie Franchises That Need To Take A Break

The Alien franchise is a bewildering rollercoaster ride of top-tier filmmaking, low-effort fan service sequels, and intriguing yet misguided prequels that raised more questions than they answered.

Fans were enormously hyped for Ridley Scott's 2012 prequel Prometheus, though the film heavily polarised fans despite praise for its visuals and Michael Fassbender's performance.

Scott promised that last year's Alien: Covenant would fix many of Prometheus' apparent flaws, though ultimately it ended up doubling down on many of them, concluding with a dubious set-up for a third prequel film.

Covenant's poor box office has since put a sequel in considerable doubt, all while fans continue to beg Fox to revive the planned Neill Blomkamp-directed Alien 5, which probably won't happen either.

This is perhaps the franchise on this list most likely to actually take a nap for some time. It's possible that David's (Fassbender) arc could be completed in a future movie, but it's far more likely we don't actually get another Alien movie of any kind until around the mid-2020s.

At that point, it'll most likely be a soft reboot from a new director with a small supporting role for a 75-year-old Sigourney Weaver.
