12 Movie Openings That Totally Trolled Audiences

7. Tragedy Girls

Gunpowder & Sky

Still wildly underrated, the 2017 indie horror comedy Tragedy Girls is the latest in a long line of genre hybrids which use the conventions of the lasher sub genre to comment on horror's wider socio political implications.

However, where the likes of 2015's Final Girl or TV's Scream Queens recast the horror heroine as a more self aware protagonist with added agency (thanks to Sidney Prescott's enduring influence on the horror genre). Tragedy Girls takes, er, a different route.

The film opens on a serial killer pursuing a teen victim, until he's outsmarted and kidnapped by a pair of young girls who reveal themselves to be far worse (but better organized) murderers. The rest of the film follows their gleeful murder spree, all of which they pin on said killer.

A pitch black twist on the genre's conventions, this one flips expectations from the very first reel.
