Casting your characters in your movie must be one of the hardest parts of filmmaking when it comes to being a director. Trying to find the right person who you think can perfectly capture the vision you have for your story will either make or break the whole thing.

To many people, the casting of Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future is champagne casting. It's perfect. But he wasn't the original Marty McFly for a long time. Director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale wanted Michael J. Fox for Marty McFly from the very start, but he was unable to commit to the filming schedule due to his hit sitcom, Family Ties, starting to get big viewing figures.

The crew had no choice but to audition several other actors including Ben Stiller, Johnny Depp and Jon Cryer. In the end, the role went to Eric Stoltz, who would later become known for his role in Some Kind of Wonderful and Mask. The movie shot for a few weeks, with Stoltz in the starring role alongside Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown. In the end, producers decided that the comedy wasn't flowing as they wanted.

Thanks to that and some tension with other actors on set, Stoltz was fired and Fox was brought back on board. The rest is history - or the future?
