Look, we all know that Under the Silver Lake director/ three first names David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows is a masterpiece of allegorical horror.
The 2015 teen genre film fuses an art-y nostalgic sensibility with an intense story of psycho-sexual horror anchored by a potent premise—what if there were a supernatural curse passed on through sex?
The young cast are uniformly superb, particularly breakout star Maika Monroe, and the film is gorgeously shot and oppressively tense throughout.
That is, until the pointless climax, wherein the characters think throwing toasters at this thing will kill it for some reason.
Yes, the director admitted the plan was “supposed to” be stupid.
But then why include it at all, when the later, darkly ambiguous actual ending is so much more effective?
