Starring consistently underrated Mr Robot star Rami Malek, this 2018 biopic earned the star a Best Actor Oscar for his role as the iconic rockstar, Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

However, the behind the scenes rumours of Queen’s remaining members turning the script into a self-serving hagiography for themselves can be seen in some scenes.

There’s no need for this otherwise well realized biopic to villainise Mercury in order to let his surviving band members off the hook—after all, who was really the first member to go solo and break up the band?

And who was second, for that matter?

This lionization of Queen’s living members (minus Deacon) led original star Sacha Baron Cohen to abandon the project, and it’s hard to watch without imagining the Borat actor playing a more formidable, daring contradiction of Mercury’s incomparable camp machismo contrasted with Malek’s comparatively safe, feeble, tragic interpretation.
