7. Suspiria – That Anticlimactic Ending
Tenebre director Dario Argento’s 1977 flick Suspiria sees a young dancer attend a remote ballet school, only to be surrounded by gruesome murders enacted by some unseen dark force.
By and large, the film is an unrelenting experience in pure cinematic terror, with its horrific murder sequences and nightmarish Goblin score comparable only to the likes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in terms of its sheer, brutal commitment to constantly rising anxiety-inducing action.
Then comes the, er, divisive ending, wherein our heroine stabs an old lady with a hairbrush and all is well in the world. Roll credits.
It’s pretty hard to take the preceding terror seriously again after that dud of a denouement.
