6. Midsommar – Christian’s Cartoony Character

Midsommar Florence Pugh Jack Reynor
A24

We get it, okay? Some boyfriends aren’t supportive.

Some are, in fact, so unsupportive that you’d feel alright sacrificing them to a Nordic cult for their bizarre ritual. Everyone who has met grad students in their time can buy this premise.

But despite Sing Street star Jack Reynor’s valiant attempts at humanizing Christian, the bastard boyfriend of Florence Pugh’s unwell heroine, the character’s cartoonish awfulness makes it difficult to care about the fate of such an unrealistically nasty deuteragonist.

This flaw is epitomised in his rape late in Hereditary director Ari Aster’s strange horror Midsommar, a scene which seems to be aiming for dark (tasteless) comedy but plays out more pointlessly grim.
