12 Movies That Tried Too Hard To Innovate (And Sucked Anyway)
9. Welcome To Marwen
This one was pretty much the biggest Oscar Bait fail of 2018 and among the worst such failures in recent years. The reason for this is that it took a unique but risky approach to the true-life story of an amnesiac, Mark Hogancamp (played by Steve Carell), who created a model village in order to deal with his trauma following the assault which left him with head injuries and PTSD.
The film inter-cuts live-action drama with animation sequences involving the dolls in the model village (these sequences represent Mark's imagination) and this was a very bold storytelling tactic but the film ended up losing the heart of the story since this didn't work at all.
The inter-cutting of these sentimental, often silly animated sequences with the film's serious dramatic story-line results in tonal shifts that are so jarring that they completely ruin the whole film, while the terrible writing in these animated segments (and, quite often, in the live-action parts too) certainly didn't help matters.
