12 Movies You Didn’t Realise Were Originally TV Shows

6. The Naked Gun

Despite the fact that the original movie said "From the files of Police Squad" you'd likely be surprised at the number of film fans who have no idea that the Naked Gun series was actually based on a television show. Part of that is probably because Police Squad didn't last very long - just six episodes, in fact. The movie, along with sequels The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear and The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult saw Leslie Neilson reprising his role of Lt. Frank Drebin from the short-lived 1982 series. Filled with slapstick and wordplay, the series did much better on the big screen than the small one, though TV Guide in 2013 ranked Police Squad in the top ten of TV Shows cancelled too soon. Regardless, when fans think of Drebin, they think of the Naked Gun movies, and Police Squad itself is rarely mentioned.
