12 Recent Movies Better Reviewed Than Green Book

9. Searching

Searching John Cho
Screen Gems

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 92% (7.44/10)

Searching is without question one of the least Oscar-friendly movies on this list, because it's the latest entry into the growing "shared screen" genre, where the entire film unfolds over a series of laptop and smartphone screens.

Prior to this film the technique had largely been reserved for chintzy horror films like Unfriended, but Searching dared to dream bigger, crafting a genuinely affecting father-daughter story wrapped around a thoroughly engrossing mystery-thriller.

If that's not enough, director Aneesh Chaganty did a remarkable job demonstrating his understanding of contemporary technology, while John Cho gave a wonderful performance as a frantic father trying to locate his missing daughter (and even earned an Independent Spirit nomination for Best Male Lead).

But the Academy has its well-entrenched prejudices - quite ironic given Green Book's subject matter - and let's face it, an old-fashioned race drama with a trite "Can't we all just get along?" message will always play better for their milquetoast tastes.
