It was the superhero showdown that fans had been dreaming of, as the two titans of DC Comics finally got the chance to face off one-on-one for the first time ever on the big screen. For about three minutes.
There's enough going on in Batman v Superman to fill four movies, given the rapidly-accelerated world-building that Zack Snyder was trying to accomplish. Instead of focusing solely on the simmering issues between an alien that destroyed half of Metropolis at the end of Man of Steel and the world-weary crimefighter that makes it his mission to stop him, the two title characters were reduced to bit-part players in their own movie.
It's a Man of Steel sequel, a Batman reboot, a Justice League teaser and an advert for the entire DCEU all rolled into one, drowned in dimly-lit cinematography, heavy-handed exposition and performances that are all across the board, with a central conflict resolved by the coincidence that their mothers have the same name.
Batman v Superman promised so much on name alone, but there's just far too many things happening at any given time that none of it really lands, and by the time we finally got to the Return of the King-esque multiple endings after two and a half hours, a lot of people had long since lost interest.
