12 Saddest Heroic Sacrifices In Movies
6. Han Solo - Star Wars The Force Awakens
Though the latest trilogy of Star Wars has had a few hits and misses (to put it lightly), it doesn’t deter to the huge cultural impact that Star Wars has continued to have ever since the 70s. When it was confirmed the original cast would return for The Force Awakens, fans couldn’t wait to see what was in store. For Han Solo, it was his ultimate end to spare Kylo Ren of his suffering.
During the end of the movie, Han Solo finally confronts his son, begging him to return to the light side. There is the sign of possible reconciliation, but as Han Solo can see Kylo Ren’s struggle between the Light and Dark side of the Force, he lets him plunge his lightsaber right into his chest.
Even with this horrific image, Solo manages to touch his son’s face in a last gesture of love before falling into the vast abyss below. With Rey watching from above scream in anguish as her mentor dies, we are reminded of a similar scene in the original trilogy, when Luke had to watch his mentor Obi-Wan die in a similar circumstance.
The scene serves as a passing of the torch from the old generation to the new, but seeing Han Solo die brought tears and screams to fans who grew up watching the original series.
