Release Date: April 3, 2015 James Wan's Insidious was a surprisingly effective horror flick, deriving plenty of chills from a familiar haunting story and being a hit with critics and audiences, grossing a huge $97 million against a tiny $1.5 million budget. A sequel was inevitable, and Insidious Chapter 2 hit cinemas late last year, receiving mostly negative reviews from critics but being even more successful than the original film, making a whopping $160 million against a $5 million budget. Again, with a gross like that and it being a horror franchise, it would be stupid from a financial perspective not to make a third film. What's frustrating to me is that Insidious Chapter 2 actually gave the story a proper ending, as the protagonists have themselves hypnotised in order to forget their astral projection powers, but in regular horror fashion, there's an additional scene tacked on in order to tease a sequel. Evidently some audiences do enjoy these movies, but given how terrible the second film was, why should we expect better from part three? It'll be interesting to see how Insidious 3 performs at the box office given how disappointing the second film was: were audiences turned off by it, or will the undemanding nature of date movie horror audiences win out?
