12 Upcoming Movies That Have Ignored Massive Mistakes
7. Picking An Awful Release Date - Alita: Battle Angel
The Lesson: Assassin's Creed
There are actually a number of reasons to be worried about Alita: Battle Angel - director Robert Rodriguez never working with a $200 million budget before, and those offputtingly large eyes - but by far the biggest barrier to the movie's success is its awful release date.
Originally planned to release on July 20, Alita was moved to December in order to avoid competing with the stacked likes of Ant-Man and the Wasp, Skyscraper, The Equalizer 2 and Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
Except this doesn't make any sense at all, because December's slate is even more packed and dangerous. Alita releases on December 21st and will be competing with Mortal Engines, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Aquaman, Bumblebee, Holmes and Watson, and worst of all, Mary Poppins Returns.
All of these movies release within a week of Alita, and considering it's easily the hardest sell of the lot, it's going to get absolutely trounced at the box office. The same thing happened to Assassin's Creed in 2016 when it bravely - and stupidly - stared down Rogue One and Passengers and predictably bombed.
The worst thing is that this incoming trainwreck can be seen coming many miles off, but if Fox is smart, they'll either push the movie forward to a less-crowded October release or delay it further into 2019. Without a shift, it's basically doomed, and any potential for a franchise will instantly go kaput.
