12 Upcoming Sci-Fi Movies That Could Be Better Than Star Wars: The Last Jedi

7. Ad Astra

Release Date: January 11, 2019

James Gray (The Immigrant, The Lost City of Z) probably isn't the first director most would consider for a high-concept sci-fi thriller starring Brad Pitt, but given Gray's penchant for deliberate, contemplative drama and immaculate visuals, Ad Astra could be a genre classic in the making.

The movie revolves around Roy McBride (Pitt), a man who travels through the solar system in the hope of locating his father (Tommy Lee Jones), who departed on a one-way mission to Neptune 20 years earlier to seek out extraterrestrial life.

Joining Pitt and Jones are Donald Sutherland, Ruth Negga and, weirdly enough, Jamie Kennedy of all people. It's an intriguing, eclectic cast for a sci-fi odyssey that's likely to be totally unlike your typical sci-fi adventure with Gray at the helm.
