12 Upcoming Stephen King Adaptions His Readers Can Look Forward To
6. The Dark Tower
No, that is not a typo. Despite the release of The Dark Tower last summer, there's a lot of life left in the franchise. Just don't expect much of a link to last year's flop moving forward. Although the original plan for the Idris Elba-starring film was for additional movies and an ancillary TV series, those plans appear to have gone out the window.
Instead, a reboot TV series is in the planning stages for Amazon. The online retailer and streaming service is getting into franchise adaptations in a big way, having obtained the rights to Lord of the Rings, The Wheel of Time, Ringworld, and apparently The Dark Tower as well, according to Deadline.
With one of the major faults of the recent feature film being condensing the plot of several novels into a single movie (cutting out major story lines), a serialized format could do wonders for the project. It should also do away with the need for a PG-13 rating, something the author himself bemoaned. King has been referring to this new show as a reboot, and if ever there was a film property that needed one, it's this.
The Dark Tower series is being helmed by Glen Mazzara, who served as showrunner for several seasons of The Walking Dead, as well as The Shield.
