12 Upcoming Stephen King Adaptions His Readers Can Look Forward To
5. The Stand
Much like It and The Dark Tower, The Stand has a special place among fans of Stephen King. It's one of his defining novels, and his first shot at a true epic. The novel, with direct links to the Dark Tower mythos (they share an antagonist in the form of the Man in Black), is a sprawling tale of post-apocalyptic survival following a plague that wipes out most of humanity. Survivors band together, and a good vs. evil showdown looms.
The Stand was produced as a TV miniseries back in the early '90s (the opening sequence, with Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear the Reaper played over it, still resonates). Attempts at a big screen adaptation have been ongoing for years, but the novel was generally deemed too unwieldy, especially since the story really necessitates an R-rating, prior miniseries not withstanding.
However, the success of It may change that thinking. At one point, a full four feature films were proposed for The Stand, which in its uncut form runs over a thousand pages. Most recently, it looks like the project will move forward as a ten hour limited series for CBS All Access.
Once again, Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone is attached to this King project. He seems to be the go-to guy for all things King these days. Boone confirmed he is still involved in the project as recently as October, as Lilja's Library (the best King reference point on the web) noted in October.
