There have been countless animated Pokemon movies, but now, for the first time, fans will get to see Pikachu - that's Detective Pikachu - brought to life in a live-action-animation hybrid directed by Rob Letterman (Goosebumps).

There were surely more inspired filmmakers to choose from, but at least the film's being written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy), and hilariously stars Ryan Reynolds as the voice of Pikachu.

It's a fit just jarring and left-field enough that it might work, ensuring that in the very least, this won't be generically family-friendly slop.

If the script is self-aware enough and charming without being overly saccharine, this could be a rare mix of live-action and animation that really works. It's already been shooting for two months, so it won't be too long before we get our first glimpse, anyway.
