Come on, James Cromwell, were you even trying in Spider-Man 3?
They could have placed a police hat on a wooden plank and got a more convincing Captain Stacy.
Granted, the role of Gwen Stacy’s father was an insubstantial part in the third Sam Raimi film, but at least hire an actor who's interested in giving it a shot.
Denis Leary brought screen presence and gravitas to the same role when it was recast for the Amazing Spider-Man era, unhampered by a relative lack of screen time, so there's no reason why Cromwell couldn't have done the same.
