13 Anticipated 2018 Movies Destined To Disappoint
9. Pacific Rim: Uprising
The Buzz: From what's been shown off so far, Pacific Rim: Uprising is taking aim to be an even bigger and more bombastic CGI-fueled tentpole than its Guillermo del Toro-helmed predecessor.
John Boyega take the lead as Stacker Pontecost's son Jake, playing opposite Scott Eastwood and returning cast members Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, and Rinko Kikuchi.
Going by the first trailer, few people are going to complain that it isn't ridiculous enough, at least.
Why It'll Disappoint: Del Toro opting not to return for the sequel beyond producing definitely drains a lot of the enthusiasm away, especially as replacement writer-director Steven S. DeKnight has only worked in TV prior to this, and his co-writers don't have much in the way of compelling movie credits either.
Furthermore, the trailer makes it pretty clear that this sequel is going to be brighter and more candy-coloured than the first film, which naturally has many fans worried that the tone and style is going to be too light and clean, more akin to classic Power Rangers than the previous movie.
Plus, while the first film's dialogue was never exactly terrific or memorable, there are some easily identifiable clunkers in Uprising's first trailer already (namely "That's what I'm talking about!").
Keep your expectations low and hope for the best, basically.
