13 Awesome 2016 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)

RottenTomatoes Score: 98% (8.2/10)

Why It Deserves Best Picture: The real triumph of Whit Stillman's hilarious comedy is that you don't need to be a fan of Jane Austen novels to appreciate his adaptation of her Lady Susan.

This is an extremely self-aware comedy of manners that enthusiastically mocks the Austen tropes while also embracing them, driven forward by an awards-worthy, career best performance from Kate Beckinsale in the lead role.

In terms of writing, production design, direction and acting, it is totally first-rate.

Why It Won't Get Nominated: Much like Paterson, this one's too small-scale even though it was a solid box office success when considering its miniscule budget.

It could rack up a few below-the-line nominations, but Amazon Studios just don't seem massively committed to giving this and Paterson strong awards campaigns.
