13 Awful Movies With 1 Awesome Scene
2. The Invention Of Baseball - The Ridiculous Six
The Awful Movie: Adam Sandler's first direct-to-Netflix movie shamelessly appeals to the lowest common denominator with its crass humour, dubious attitude to both women and ethnic minorities, and then there's the fact that Sandler managed to convince Nick Nolte, Harvey Keitel and Steve Buscemi to appear in it.
It's not the worst thing Sandler's ever made, and at least you can watch it without directly paying for it, but it's also an inexplicable, brutal two hours in length. Christ.
The Awesome Scene: Sandler and his outlaw buddies randomly run into U.S. Army officer Abner Doubleday (John Turturro) as he's in the middle of inventing baseball, or as he calls it, Sticky McSchnickens.
The scene "explains" various aspects of the game, such as why there are nine players per team (because two guys didn't show up), why the batter has three strikes (Doubleday changed it from two after striking out twice), the invention of the strike zone (Doubleday struck out a third time) and so on.
It's a surprisingly clever scene that's hilarious whether you're a baseball fan or not, cementing the convoluted absurdity of the beloved sport.
