Housebound. A term that applies to most of us in these pandemic times. So this Kiwi haunted house horror-comedy sounds like appropriate viewing.

Kylie (Morgana O’Reily) is a petty criminal and repeat offender who is sentenced to eight months house arrest, wherein spooky things begin to occur. Housebound is a slick looking shocker that knows how to pull off effective scares. The Going Down Into The Basement scene is the movie’s strongest scare, along with a toy teddy bear that reappears in places that it shouldn’t.

Housebound’s comedy is not as strong as other Kiwi horror-comedies when compared to Peter Jackson’s Braindead (1992) or What We Do in the Shadows (2014) which was released in the same year. And the reveal as to what is behind the spooky goings-on is also a bit disappointing.

But Housebound has a strong first half, and there’s some top splatter to look forward to towards the end. When scrolling through Shudder, Housebound is a safe bet to keep you entertained whilst in lockdown.
