Though Martin Scorsese's period crime epic was an unexpected box office bomb and failed to win a single of its ten Oscar nominations, that does little to diminish its legacy as one of the filmmaker's most underrated efforts.

Yes, it's very long and Cameron Diaz's performance is incredibly hit-and-miss for viewers, but Daniel Day-Lewis unforgettable, Oscar-nominated turn as Bill "The Butcher" Cutting is reason enough to see it, as well as astounding production design and a wealth of gritty, violent action.

That's without even mentioning Leonardo DiCaprio, who is terrific (if wholly overshadowed by Day-Lewis) as he embarks on his first collaboration with Scorsese. Sure, it's no Goodfellas, but honestly, what is?
