Neil Jordan's expectation-defying masterpiece turns crime and romance tropes on their heads with its trenchant examination of masculinity and gender, aided by excellent work from Stephen Rea, Jaye Davidson and Miranda Richardson.

Its big twist is one of Hollywood's worst-kept secrets, but even being aware of it going in, this is still an intoxicating, deeply-felt drama that makes fantastic use of the Troubles as a landscape to further heighten the emotional and dramatic intensity.

It won't be for everyone, but there are huge rewards for those prepared to follow Jordan down his genre-busting rabbit-hole.
